Solved: Which governs year of income-date of check or date received?

When using the Cash basis, you’ll have to record the payment with the actual date you received it. Unlike in Accrual which is based on when you perform the service or the day you sent the invoice. If you properly record the Receive Payment for a credit card when entered-swiped-dipped QB will properly report your cash basis income to include that payment. The above are the most common gifts a charity will receive in the waning days of the year. Beware of a prospective donor who approaches you in December trying to complete a gift of real estate or artwork (or other tangible personal property), by year’s end. Trying to rush through in a short time period could lead to later regrets.

All I can do is double click on the transaction which takes me to the check entry form and change the date there. The check was printed on the date (8/20) that the check entry form, however, it cleared 5 days in the future (8/25). I want the date on the check form to stay at 8/20 and I want to be able to change the clearance date in the bank account register to 8/25 so that it matches the records downloaded from the bank. If you’re a cash basis taxpayer, you record income and, therefore, the payment date on an invoice, when the payment is “constructively received”, that is, made available to you without restriction. So, in your example, the payment date is January 2, the day you received the check in the mail.

Chapter 6 – Submitting Requests

When I download (bank feeds) transactions for the account from the bank the transaction for the check gets automatically and correctly matched with the entry into the register made when I created the check payment. However, the date does not get updated to the actual clearance date nor can I change it simply by editing the date in the register view. In my experience and reading the IRS instructions the 1099 is for the period you are getting paid by the customer. The CUSTOMER will or should (if your business formation is the type to receive a 1099) send you a 1099 for the payment in the prior year if over $600.

  • And you cannot delay the posting of a credit card payment to when it is actually funded any more than you can record checks you write asof date they clear yourbankrather than date you created them.

The fact you don’t get it in your bank isn’t something the customer will know if issued close to the end of the year. You will receive the 1099 and that income will go into your tax forms. I am kind of puzzled why QB engineers did not think of allowing a different date for a check payment in the bank account register.

This way, they can review this request and add it to future updates. To send feedback, you can go to the Help menu and select Send Feedback Online. Then, choose Product Suggestions and enter your feedback.

I can change the date there but that is not what I want. What I need is to keep the check date in the check form at 9/1 but change the check’s clearance date in the bank account register to 9/5. Of course the transaction in the bank account register should still be linked to the check form. And you are correct, what is in the bank register is the value date. However, when I issue a check payment then the transaction gets automatically recorded into the bank register.

A pay period is the time frame used to calculate the earned wages of an employee and when they will receive it. The ex-dividend date is the date for new shareholders that disqualifies them for earning a dividend in the next period. In other words, investors who buy shares on or after the ex-dividend date will not earn a dividend in the next payment.

I don’t understand why this makes reconciliation harder than, say, editing each check first to change the date to match the cleared date. Doing that before reconciling is like reconciling twice. As  you suggest I will provide feedback to the product engineers. I am kind of surprised that this has not come up before. As far as I know, the concept of a “value date” is a common thing in accounting. Furthermore, you can check out the following articles about adding and matching transactions as well as reconciling your account in QuickBooks Desktop.

My question is, the sales are on 2019 sales reports because the sale occurred on 12/31 and the customers paid on 12/31 with credit cards. So I did receive payment on 12/31, but it was in process at the bank and the deposit from the merchant account only showed on my bank account on 1/2, next business day. Both salary-based employees and wage workers are paid every month.

There must have been funds in the checking account sufficient to honor the check on the day written. Of course, if the charity presents the check for payment in January and it is not honored by the bank, it cannot be a December gift even if the check is subsequently paid. Information entered electronically yield to maturity vs coupon rate in anticipation of filing online is saved for 30 days from the last time a person worked on the request. USCIS cannot accept the benefit request until the person completes the electronic submission process. In 2011, the IRS clarified ways that taxpayers can prove their payments were mailed on time.

However, the check does not clear on the same date but on a later date. This makes it very hard to reconcile a bank account and look for errors since the transactions in QB are not in the same order as the transactions reported by the bank. Bi-weekly pay periods have some complexities in tracking and projecting cash flow. This is because certain months have three pay periods instead of two.
